Quantification of binaural loudness summation by measuring simple reaction time

چکیده
When listening to sounds in a natural environment, different sound pressure levels reach the two ears. They are nevertheless combined to result in a single ’binaural’ loudness. This phenomenon is called binaural loudness summation. In the laboratory it can be carried to an extreme by stimulating one ear only (monaural presentation) or both ears (binaural or diotic presentation) using headphones. Typically, binaural stimulation sounds considerably louder.

Simple reaction time for broadband sounds compared to pure tones
Although many studies have explored the relation between reaction time (RT) and loudness, including effects of intensity, frequency, and binaural summation, comparable work on spectral summation is rare. However, most real-world sounds are not pure tones and typically have bandwidths covering several critical bands. Since comparing to a 1-kHz pure tone, the reference tone, is important for loud...
متن کاملAuditory fMRI correlates of loudness perception for monaural and diotic stimulation
Loudness as the perceptual correlate of sound intensity is formed by some neural processing along the auditory pathway from the cochlea to the cortex. The loudness of a sound is largely determined by its level. Still, there are several other acoustical factors like stimulus bandwidth, duration, modulations, as well as personal factors like, e.g., the individual hearing status, that may affect p...
متن کاملBinaural summation and lateralization of transients: a combined analysis.
Subjects judged the loudness and the lateral position of dichotic transient signals, which were presented at equal and unequal levels, synchronously and asynchronously, to the two ears. Binaural loudness summation of clicks does not obey a law of linear addition: It is partial at low level and superadditive at high level. Supersummation is greater for interaurally delayed clicks than for coinci...
متن کاملRange and regression, loudness scales, and loudness processing: toward a context-bound psychophysics.
How does context affect basic processes of sensory integration and the implicit psychophysical scales that underlie those processes? Five experiments examined how stimulus range and response regression determine characteristics of (a) psychophysical scales for loudness and (b) 3 kinds of intensity summation: binaural loudness summation, summation of loudness between tones widely spaced in frequ...
متن کاملInteraural correlation and the binaural summation of loudness.
The effect of interaural correlation (rho) on the loudness for noisebands was measured using a loudness-matching task in naive listeners. The task involved a sequence of loudness comparisons for which the intensity of one stimulus in a given comparison was varied using a one-up-one-down adaptive rule. The task provided an estimate of the level difference (in decibels) for which two stimulus con...
